POLK COUNTY, FL — A head-on crash involving a semi-truck Tuesday morning in northeast Davenport claimed the life of a 34-year-old man, according to ABC Action News.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the fatal accident happened on the northbound side of U.S. Highway 17/19, south of the intersection with Ernie Caldwell Boulevard. It was first reported at about 4:19 a.m.
An early investigation found that Luis Garcia III, a Clay County resident, was behind the wheel of a white 2011 Dodge Charger that was heading southbound on the northbound highway. The Charger ultimately collided head-on with a northbound semi-truck driven by 29-year-old Kevin Fontanez, a Winter Haven resident.
First responders pronounced Garcia deceased at the scene, confirmed officials. Investigators noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck.
Fontanez, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not reported injured.
Authorities have not specified what led up to Garcia driving on the wrong side of the road, but an investigation remains ongoing.
