4 firefighters hospitalized after crash off I-345 near downtown Dallas

DALLAS, TX – Four Dallas Fire-Rescue crew members were injured, one critically, Sunday morning when a fire engine ran off Interstate 345 and landed on DART tracks near downtown Dallas, reports WFAA 8 ABC.

Dallas Police said the wreck occurred on a stretch of I-345 that runs over South Good Latimer Expressway. It was first reported shortly after 6:00 a.m.

Preliminary details indicate that Dallas Fire Rescue Engine 11 was among multiple engines responding to a call when the truck hydroplaned and lost control. Moments later, it traveled off the I-345 bridge and fell onto the DART tracks below, coming to rest on its right side.

Officials said a Dallas Fire-Rescue lieutenant who was in the front passenger seat was seriously injured in the crash and had to be extricated by crews using the Jaws of Life tools. As of Monday, July 22, he remains in a local ICU.

Three other fire crew members who were hospitalized have since been released.

The major crash left multiple sections of I-345, South Good Latimer Expressway, Routh Street, as well as the DART rail system shut down in the immediate aftermath.

At the time of WFAA’s report, repairs to DART rails were in progress but were expected to run until Wednesday evening.
