Driver killed, passenger injured in crash with tractor near Murfreesboro

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN — A 49-year-old man died last Friday, January 26, on Interstate 24 in northwest Murfreesboro, according to WKRN.

The accident happened on the eastbound side of I-24 near mile marker 72, some time after 6:00 p.m.

Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) said Diego Lux Gomez was behind the wheel of a 2004 Honda Civic heading eastbound on the interstate when, for reasons still unclear, the vehicle veered veered off the right side of the roadway. Gomez appeared to have lost control of the Honda after overcorrecting, causing it to face the wrong direction. Despite Gomez’s attempt to swerve onto the left shoulder, the driver’s side of the car was hit by a Volvo tractor and both vehicles came to a stop in the median.

First responders pronounced Gomez deceased at the scene. His passenger, 23, suffered unspecified injuries.

The THP noted that both Honda occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck, as was the Volvo’s 43-year-old driver from Georgia, who was not reported hurt.

No further details have been made available at this time.
