2 dead after 3-wheeled moped hits commercial truck in Greenwood

GREENWOOD COUNTY, SC — Two people have died following a crash late Monday afternoon in Greenwood involving a three-wheeled moped and a commercial truck, reports WYFF4.

The collision unfolded in the area of South Emerald Road and North Emerald Road shortly after 4:10 p.m.

A preliminary investigation found that Gregory Jon Smith and Joanne Warren Williams, both local residents, were traveling on the moped. At one point, the moped hit a commercial truck with a wood-chipping trailer as the truck began turning left from South Emerald Road onto North Emerald Road.

First responders pronounced the moped operator deceased at the scene. The passenger was rushed by medical helicopter to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, where the patient also later died. WYFF4 did not clarify whether the Greenwood County Coroner has identified which victim was the driver.

No injuries to the driver of the pickup truck or their passenger were reported following the wreck.
