Truck driver charged after rollover collision in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Virginia State Police charged a truck driver with reckless driving following a rollover collision that happened on I-64 East Tuesday. 

The crash happened after 3:30 a.m. near mile marker 256 near Oyster Point Road, according to 13 News Now. Police said the truck driver had fallen asleep while operating his Volvo semi-truck. He crashed into a guardrail and into several trees, which caused the truck to overturn. 

Despite the nature of the crash, the driver — Abdelhadi Bencherifa — was spared from serious injuries. Officers also charged him with failing to maintain a lane. 

Police shut down the area for the clean-up process and investigation. No other details were available at this time.
