Tractor-trailer driver hurt in crash caused by improper lane change

MOUNT SIDNEY, VA – A driver of a tractor-trailer transporting cattle was injured after a driver of a 2023 Lincoln Nautilus made an improper lane change and hit his truck Monday.

CBS 19 News said that after the Lincoln driver struck the tractor-trailer, which happened before 11:45 a.m. on I-81 North, the impact caused the 2005 Kenworth W900 truck to then hit a  2017 Nissan Pathfinder. The truck overturned and drifted off the right side of the road. The Nissan also veered right, while the Lincoln went to the left.

All motorists wore seatbelts. Virginia State Police said that 11 cows in the tractor-trailer succumbed to fatal wounds, while the big rig driver, 69-year-old Dewey Emswiler from Shenandoah, sustained minor injuries. Police did not confirm if he was hospitalized but did say that the car drivers were unharmed and that they cited the Lincoln driver, 56-year-old Tonya S. Cleveland of Verona, for pursuing an unsafe lane change.

State Police launched an investigation and have not provided additional information at this time.
