WAVERLY, VA – A semi-truck driver was charged following a crash with a Norfolk Southern train that happened on the outskirts of Waverly on Sunday.
Virginia State Police told 13NewsNow that the events unfolded when a 33-year-old man, operating a 2016 Volvo semi-truck, tried to cross the railroad tracks at the intersection of General Mahone Highway and Walnut Hill Road and became stuck.
The truck driver, identified as Omar Abdulhameed Al Shaban from Charlottesville, was able to exit his vehicle prior to the train colliding with his truck.
The impact of the collision caused Al Shaban’s truck to overturn, and left him and the train conductor uninjured.
The semi-truck was carrying potato chips at the time of the crash. Police did not specify what company the truck was affiliated with.
Al Shaban was charged with failing to safely proceed through a railroad crossing in line with Virginia law 46.2-885.
