Big rig vs. SUV crash in Painter sends 4 to hospitals

PAINTER, VA – Four people were sent to separate hospitals after a head-on crash between a 2016 Peterbilt propane truck and a 2018 Ford Escape Saturday.

The collision happened after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Route 13 and Keller Pond Road, according to WAAVY

Virginia State Patrol said road conditions were slick, which is a factor that caused the truck driver, 52, to lose control of his truck and, drift into the opposite lanes of traffic and hit the Ford SUV head-on. The truck then rolled over. The SUV was totaled as a result.

The SUV driver, 38, and her two children, ages 10 and 14, suffered serious, life-threatening wounds, while the truck driver sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

EMS crews transported the truck driver, Christopher Fritzgerald Matthews, to Riverside Hospital and the SUV motorist, Loida Tema, to Norfolk General Hospital.

Tema’s 14-year-old child was airlifted to John Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and the 10-year-old was taken by ground to Norfolk CHKD Hospital.
