Driver dies, 80 Cleveland homes affected after tanker truck overturns

CLEVELAND, TX – A 2,800 pound tanker truck overturned, causing the tank to rupture and transmit sulfur dioxide into the air, which affected 80 homes and claimed the life of its driver.

The wreck happened on Friday on FM-125, ABC 13 indicated in a report. Authorities pronounced the driver dead at the scene, and identified him as 54-year-old Micheal Rider from Buna.

Texas Department of Transportation said residents nearby were evacuated and able to go to shelters in ColdSpring until crews could clean up the chemical spills from the road and until the smell passed.

On Saturday, authorities gave some evacuees the greenlight to return home and shut down FM-1725 along FM-3081 and the area of Glen Haven Road. On Sunday, officials said sulfur dioxide was not detected, allowing all residents to also go back to their homes.
