Car driver dies, trash truck catches fire in Harlingen head-on wreck

HARLINGEN, TX – A 23-year-old man driving a Kia failed to maintain a lane, causing him to crash head-on with a trash truck and the truck to catch fire and claim his life last Tuesday.

This collision happened before 9 a.m. on FM 801, up the road from Murrow Road, MYRGV reports. Preliminary details from the Texas Department of Public Safety also said that the driver of the 2020 Kia Sedona was also speeding on FM 801’s southbound lanes prior to drifting into the northbound lanes and hitting the 2023 Mack TE-6 garbage truck.

The impact of the wreck immediately caused the 23-year-old, later identified as Ian Jeremy Rivera, to succumb to fatal wounds.

Texas Department of Public Safety said the truck driver was not hospitalized but did not specify if the motorist was injured.
