PECOS CITY, TX – Authorities have confirmed the deaths of two people following a train derailment involving a tractor-trailer in West Texas, according to FOX 9.
The double-fatal incident unfolded on the tracks near the Chamber of Commerce in Pecos City, about an hour west from Odessa.
Officials say the truck was carrying a heavy load when, for reasons still unclear, it became stopped on the tracks. Shortly after, a train collided with the vehicle and then derailed from the tracks.
The incident, which impacted multiple train cars and damaged the city’s Chamber of Commerce building, ultimately claimed the lives of two people. One victim was pronounced deceased while the other succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.
Authorities have since confirmed that the decedents were employees of the Union Pacific Railroad.
An unspecified number of people who were in the Chamber of Commerce building at the time suffered minor injuries.
Reeves County officials said although three cars of the train were transporting hazardous materials, no spill was detected.
An investigation remains underway.
