LENOIR CITY, TN – A 17-year-old teenager died after a rear-end collision involving a big rig on I-40 East last Tuesday, July 15, WBIR reports.
The crash happened after 2:30 p.m. during a traffic congestion period near I-75. Preliminary details suggest that a 32-year-old adult driving a Mercedes vehicle had rear-ended the 17-year-old’s Geo car.
The impact of the collision pushed the Geo forward, causing it to strike the back of the big rig hauling two trailers. The young teen driver did not wear a seatbelt and died from their injuries at the scene.
The Mercedes driver was injured and the truck driver was unharmed.
Tennessee Highway Patrol shut down the eastbound lanes for several hours for the clean-up process and investigation.
While the crash details remain preliminary, troopers said the Mercedes driver may face charges depending on the results of the investigation.
