Food truck backs out, fatally hitting man in Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN – A 48-year-old man, standing behind a food truck, assisting the truck driver with not backing out into a building, died when he was struck by the trailer Friday.

This collision happened in the 2800th block of Lebanon Pike, according to WKRN. The deceased man, identified as Favian Ubense Cruz-Vargas, was standing in front of the building and behind the truck when he was hit. The impact led Cruz-Vargas to then get wedged between the truck and the building.

While details behind this wreck remain scarce, the driver’s inexperience in operating an 18-wheeler was suspected to be a contributing factor behind why this crash happened.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said the driver, identified as Omar Martinez-Gonzalez, 42, faces charges for not having proof of insurance and a valid driver’s license.

Police did not specify if Cruz-Vargas was driving with Martinez-Gonzalez prior to guiding him with the vehicle reversal process.
