NASHVILLE, TN — Multiple lanes of westbound Interstate 40 in west Nashville were closed Monday afternoon following a semi-truck fire, according to ABC 7.
The incident was reported at mile marker 204, near White Bridge Road, at around 2:20 p.m.
While it’s unclear whether a collision or mechanical issues caused the blaze, Nashville Fire Department officials said the semi was transporting low-grade radioactive waste, which was contained to its packaging, when it caught fire.
All traffic to the area was shut down as crews worked to completely extinguish the flames. Officials confirmed that they did not detect hazardous levels in their readings of the radioactive material.
All eastbound and westbound lanes were blocked during the emergency response but were reopened some time after 5:00 p.m.
An investigation by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency was in progress.
