SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN — A 37-year-old North Carolina woman died last Friday night after her pickup truck collided with the back of a big rig on Interstate 81 in southwest Blountville, reports WJHL.
The fatal accident happened in the southbound lanes near mile marker 64, a mile north of Airport Parkway. Tennessee Highway Patrol officials responded to the scene at about 9:06 p.m.
According to the crash report, southbound traffic had come to a standstill because of a previous collision. The woman was driving a pickup truck in the right lane when she failed to slow down in time before the stopped traffic. Moments later, the pickup rear-ended the tractor-trailer, causing both vehicles to lose control before coming to a stop in the right lane.
The driver of the pickup, Alexa Hoffman, was pronounced deceased. Officials said she was seat-belted at the time of the collision. Her passenger, a North Carolina man who was also wearing a seatbelt, suffered unspecified injuries.
No injuries to the driver of the semi were reported.
