ANDERSON COUNTY, SC — A 61-year-old woman from Iva has died following a fiery crash last Wednesday night, January 3, near Townville, reports WYFF4.
The fatal collision unfolded on southbound Interstate 85 near mile marker 12, about a mile north of State Highway 24. The scene prompted a response from nearly 60 area firefighters.
According to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, the victim, Stephanie L. McGill, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when her vehicle struck an 18-wheeler head-on. The force of the impact caused both the car and the big rig to catch fire.
Townville Volunteer Fire Department crews arrived on the scene to find the semi, which had been transporting thousands of butane canisters, engulfed in flames. The extensively-damaged car was located several hundreds of yards away.
First responders extricated the McGill from the vehicle and rushed her and the truck driver to an local hospital. Authorities confirmed McGill died from multiple traumatic injuries late Thursday morning, January 4.
