ANDERSON, SC – South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of a concrete truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when they caused a chain-reaction crash that led to a baby’s death.
WECT News Channel 6 said the events of this collision unfolded on U.S. 29 Thursday when the concrete truck, which was traveling too fast for conditions, rear-ended a sedan that was stopped for roadwork. The impact caused the sedan to strike a pickup truck, which then set off a chain-reaction wreck involving a total of 10 automobiles, leaving the sedan driver and a 3-month-old infant injured.
An ambulance took the sedan driver to a hospital, and a medical helicopter transported the baby to a medical facility.
Authorities said the baby, who was properly restrained in a car seat at the time of the crash, died at the hospital at 1:17 a.m. on Friday morning from a subdural hemorrhage following a skull fracture.
The condition of the sedan driver was not immediately shared, but officials did confirm the other drivers were unharmed, and that the truck driver will face charges for their role in the crash.
