Semi driver hospitalized, woman dies after crash near Blacksburg

NEAR BLACKSBURG, SC – A sedan driver had drifted off her lane on westbound Highway 5 and hit a semi-truck going east, claiming her life and sending the truck driver to a hospital Saturday.

South Carolina Highway Patrol told FOX Carolina that the sedan driver was driving next to the center line prior to crashing into the big rig around 7:45 p.m. Once the vehicles crashed, the sedan motorist, later identified as Charity Hope Smith, 46, of North Carolina, died while EMS crews rushed the truck driver to a hospital.

Troopers launched an investigation and confirmed Smith, the sole occupant of her vehicle, did not wear a seatbelt while operating her vehicle.

Officials have not commented on the truck motorist’s (also a solo driver) physical condition, nor have they released additional information at this time. New information will be added once authorities have more details available.
