FLORENCE, SC – South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the details behind a fatal trash truck crash that happened on Hyman Road Wednesday.
SCHP told WPDE that prior to the crash, the trash truck driver was driving east on Hyman when they drifted off the road, first going right and then left. The motorist overcorrected, which led them to drift off the road once again and ultimately crash into a tree.
An occupant of the trash truck died from his injuries at the scene. He was identified as 48-year-old Willie Leverne Lee, Jr. from Coward. Troopers did not confirm whether Lee was the driver or a passenger. Nonetheless, troopers are continuing to investigate the details behind the collision.
Officials shut down Hyman Road, starting at Friendfield Road and ending at Two Notch, to allow for the clean-up process and investigation. The area has reopened since.
