Person fatally hit, 3 others injured as SUV hits garbage truck in Columbia

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC — One person died late Monday afternoon after being struck during a two-vehicle wreck in northwest Columbia, according to The State.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the events unfolded on Wescott Road, near Bush River Road, at around 4:35 p.m.

Investigators learned that a pedestrian was positioned behind a garbage truck, which was legally parked along the westbound side of the road. At one point, they were hit by a westbound 2014 Nissan SUV, which went on to slam into the truck.

The pedestrian, whose identity remains undisclosed, was pronounced deceased by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. Officials did not immediately clarify whether the person struck was a worker, but the truck driver was not reported hurt.

First responders had the driver of the SUV, along with the vehicle’s two passengers, transported to a local hospital. No information about the extent of their injuries has been shared.

Irmo Fire District officials said part of Wescott Road was blocked off for an extended time during the response.

An investigation by the SCHP remains underway to determine what led up to the crash.
