Driver airlifted to hospital after big rig collision in Walterboro

WALTERBORO, SC – A male truck driver was airlifted to Trident Medical in North Charleston following a serious big rig collision Tuesday.

Colleton County Fire Rescue told Count on 2 that the events unraveled after 5 p.m. when the truck driver lost control of his big rig while driving on I-95. Moments later, the driver slammed into several trees, which propelled numerous 50-pound bags of sugar (located in the cab of the truck) forward. The push then caused the man to be partially thrown from his truck and was seen hanging outside of his windshield prior to Colleton County Fire Rescue arriving.

Fire crews were able to extricate the driver within the hour. Paramedics gave the man medical attention and administered life-saving whole blood before being taken to the hospital.

Drivers in the area were asked to use Bells Highway while crews continued to clear the scene.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the details behind the crash.
