5 dead following commercial car hauler crash on I-26 in Spartanburg County

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC — Five people lost their lives Saturday night in Inman as a result of a multi-vehicle crash involving a car hauler, according to WTOK.

The accident happened on a stretch of Interstate 26 near mile marker 12, just south of Calvery Road. It was first reported some time before 9;30 p.m.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, a commercial car hauler was heading westbound when it hit the back of a 2022 Toyota sedan. After the initial impact, the car hauler veered past the cable barrier and entered the eastbound highway, where it was struck by an oncoming 2024 Honda sedan.

First responders pronounced all five of the Honda’s occupants deceased at the scene.

The driver and sole occupant of the car hauler was transported to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.

Authorities said the driver of the Toyota, who was also traveling alone, was not reported hurt.

A section of I-26 was shut down during the emergency response and investigation, which remains ongoing with the highway patrol.
