OAK HILL, NC – A FedEx delivery truck driver faces multiple charges after causing a crash that killed an off-duty Burke County deputy Thursday.
According to WXII12, the commercial truck operator was charged with “misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.” North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the truck driver was trying to turn left onto Bowman Avenue from North 181 and collided with the deputy’s vehicle in the process.
The force of the collision had thrown the deputy from his vehicle, and he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. He has since been identified as Rex Ivy Powell.
The Fed Ex driver was identified as Talmadge James Belcher. He was hospitalized for minor injuries.
An investigation is underway.
