ICE Detainer Placed on Semi-Truck Driver After Fatal Indiana Crash

PORTAGE, IN – ICE placed a detainer on an Illinois semi-truck driver after a fatal collision on U.S. Hwy 20 on Thursday afternoon, Fox 32 Chicago reports.

According to authorities, the accident occurred near Douglas Drive around 1:21 pm. The semi-truck, driven by Borko Stankovic, of Lyons, Illinois, was headed eastbound when a van ahead slowed due to traffic. Stankovic did not appear to slow. He then attempted to swerve to the left, where he collided with a Subaru Crosstrek headed in the opposite direction. The semi-truck then jackknifed and rammed the van into a road sign.

The driver of the Crosstrek was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver and passenger of the van were treated for minor injuries on the scene and then released.

An investigation determined that Stankovic did not possess a CDL, but was in possession of a suspended CDL owned by a family member. He was arrested and charged with one felony count of criminal recklessness resulting in death and one felony count of reckless homicide. ICE then placed a detainer on him due to his immigration status.

It’s not clear whether ICE has detained Stankovic or if he remains in police custody.
