DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A crash involving a utility truck Friday morning near east Atlanta claimed a driver’s life, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The fatal collision took place on the westbound side of Interstate 20, near Exit 60 to Moreland Avenue (U.S. Highway 23). It was first reported at about 4:45 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was driving a white sedan when they appeared to merge from the outer right lane and onto the right shoulder, where the car then struck a utility truck. Authorities say the truck was parked on the shoulder as an unspecified number of contractors tended to light fixtures in the area. The impact of the crash caused the sedan to lose control and strike the wall along the interstate’s left side.
First responders pronounced the driver of the sedan deceased at the scene. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed as of this writing.
Only two westbound lanes were open to traffic in the immediate aftermath, causing a traffic backup to form down to Glenwood Avenue.
DeKalb County officials continue to investigate the accident.
