COMMERCE, GA – A 48-year-old man inside a parked Freightliner truck had to go to the hospital after he was struck by another on-coming semi-truck on I-85 Wednesday.
Access WDUN 75 said the crash happened around 6 a.m. Georgia State Patrol said the events unfolded when a 32-year-old man from Maryland had failed to maintain a lane while driving on the southbound lanes. He lost control of his truck and then rear-ended the parked Freightliner on the interstate shoulder. Once the trucks collided, cherries had fallen out of the moving truck and scattered all over the right lane.
Troopers discovered that the Freightliner became disabled after an unexpected mechanical issue.
The Freightliner driver, the 48-year-old man, sustained unspecified injuries and was taken to a local medical facility by Banks County EMS. Troopers later identified the injured man as Humumed Ali from Ohio.
The Maryland man who rear-ended the Freightliner was identified as Derek Corbin. Corbin was spared from injuries and received a citation for failing to maintain a lane.
Transportation crews also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they shut down the interstate’s right lane and exited the 149 southbound exit ramp just before 10 a.m. All lanes later reopened.
