LOWNDES COUNTY, GA — Authorities are investigating a crash involving a City of Valdosta Public Works truck last Thursday morning, March 7, that left a 56-year-old cyclist in critical condition, according to WTXL.
The incident unfolded in the area of North Ashley Street and East Gordon Street at about 10:50 a.m. Valdosta Police responded to the scene shortly after.
Preliminary details indicate the victim was riding a bicycle westbound on East Gordon Street when he approached the intersection and the passenger side of a City of Valdosta Public Works truck, which was about to turn onto northbound North Ashley Street. Authorities said the driver of the large truck, who later said they did not see the cyclist crossing North Ashley Street on East Gordon Street, started to turn right after the traffic light turned green. Moments later, the truck hit and ran over the cyclist.
First responders rushed the victim to a Florida hospital in critical condition.
The Valdosta Police Department continues to investigate.
