Box truck vs semi crash claims 1 life, leaves 3 others hurt near Waverly

CAMDEN COUNTY, GA — One person died last Friday, November 3, following a two-truck crash on Interstate 95 near east Waverly, reports Action News JAX.

Georgia State Patrol said the fatal wreck occurred on the southbound lanes past Dover Bluff Road.

According to an early investigation, three people were traveling in a box truck heading south in the right lane when the vehicle was rear-ended by a tanker semi-truck.

The impact of the crash sent the box truck onto the roadway’s west shoulder while the tanker truck overturned in the median. Officials say the tanker, which was transporting placarded hazardous hot asphalt, caught fire and eventually became engulfed in flames.

First responders pronounced the driver of the tanker, 43-year-old Shawn Donald, of West Hoboken, Georgia, deceased at the scene. Officials said his family has since been notified.

All three people from the box truck were taken to an area hospital, but no details about their conditions have been shared.

Crews had the roadway blocked up to half a mile radius of the crash site while they worked to contain the hazardous material and blaze. Personnel with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) were called to the area to assist in clean-up efforts.
