3-vehicle crash involving dump truck near Hiawassee leaves 1 dead, 5 hurt

HIAWASSEE, GA – A man was killed and five others, including two children, were injured in a 3-vehicle crash near Hiawassee on Friday, July 7th.

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, the crash took place at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Georgia Highway 17 near the Owl Creek Road intersection.

Troopers say a northbound Mack dump truck encountered a mechanical issue and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the oncoming lanes and collided with a 2008 GMC Sierra.

The GMC skidded off the roadway as the dump truck continued north and slammed into an oncoming Ford F-150. After the collision, the dump truck veered off the road, ultimately overturning down an embankment.

The driver of the GMC, 63-year-old Mark Savage, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 11-year-old grandson also riding in the vehicle was rushed to the ICU in critical condition. The child’s father, 41-year-old Jeremy Dalton was also hospitalized and has since been released.

Additionally, those injured din the crash include Charles W. Farmer, 68, of Cleveland, who was driving a dump truck, and Newton Wilcox, 77, of Hiawassee, the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup.

A 10-year-old child was also sent to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
