2 killed in Chatham County crash involving multiple 18-wheelers

CHATHAM COUNTY, GA — Two people lost their lives Wednesday night due to a fiery multi-truck collision at the Georgia Welcome Center in Port Wentworth, reports WTOC.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the fatal accident unfolded in the area of the center’s rear parking lot. Witness testimony indicates a single truck hauling a camper was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck another 18-wheeler.

Authorities said the impact set off a chain-reaction crash that ultimately involved a total of six big rigs, causing all vehicles to catch fire.

GSP troopers and several other area agencies responded to the site.

The striking driver and the driver of the second big rig, who is believed to have been asleep at the time, were pronounced deceased. One victim has been identified as Jacksonville, Florida resident Charles Steven.

The other four drivers were not reported injured.

An investigation remains open and ongoing.
