ATLANTA, GA – A Tesla driver ran a red light and crashed into a Hino box truck, which claimed the lives of two people and left three others in critical condition Monday.
The collision took place around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive, which is adjacent to Atlanta Botanical Garden, 11 Alive reports. Once the vehicles collided, the Tesla got trapped underneath the truck.
It appeared that the fire crews were able to remove the truck, but they had to extricate the five Tesla occupants. The driver, 21-year-old DeCarlo Carneal, and one female passenger, 23-year-old Jordan Jessie, died at the scene.
Medics rushed the surviving Tesla occupants, a man and woman, both 22 and a 26-year-old man, to an area hospital. These individuals are receiving treatment for critical life-threatening injuries, while the truck driver and passenger were unharmed.
Atlanta police launched an investigation and have not released other information at this time.
