WINSTON, GA – Two drivers sustained minor injuries and a big rig caught on fire after a crash involving a trash truck on I-20 Monday.
Georgia State Patrol told Times-Georgian that the operator of the trash truck, 65-year-old Dwayne Clark from Oxford, Georgia, had driven with his trash truck bed up. The truck bed then crashed into the South Bagget Road overpass. The impact of the collision caused the bed to fall from the bridge and land on the interstate’s right and middle lanes.
A short time later, a big rig driver came across the truck bed. The big rig driver, 40-year-old Latarris Howard from Benoit, Mississippi, did his best to avoid the truck bed, but hit another truck’s debris and jackknifed. The impact of the collision caused the big rig to catch on fire.
Troopers said the darkness, rainy, and foggy weather conditions played a role in the crash.
Troopers and Georgia Department of Transportation crews shut down the overpass and interstate and redirected west and eastbound traffic away from the freeway.
During the closures, engineers used the time to assess the structural integrity of the bridge, and crews cleaned up all debris left from the collision.
Authorities reopened the westbound lanes at 5:15 a.m. and the eastbound lanes at 8:15 a.m. Transportation crews will inspect the bridge again at a later date.
