UPDATE: MCSO release more details after fatal big rig crash at Cudjoe Key construction site

MONROE COUNTY, FL — Monroe County officials have signaled that changes may soon be introduced following a tractor-trailer crash Tuesday, December 5, that claimed a driver’s life in a Cudjoe Key construction zone, reports Local 10.

The fatal accident occurred at mile marker 21, north of Drost Drive and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 5:00 a.m. Multiple agencies, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, fire rescue crews, and the Florida Highway Patrol, responded to the scene.

Officials say the victim was driving a semi-truck that overturned and burst into flames after striking a line of concrete barriers along the southbound lane transition into the center turn lane.

On Monday, December 18, Sheriff Rick Ramsay and County Commissioner Michelle Lincoln joined four Florida Department of Transportation representatives at the crash site. Ramsay observed that the FDOT officials appeared to acknowledge certain precautions could have been enforced to create a safer zone, such as more lighting and reduced speed.

Following the wreck, crews have installed additional barrel-like barricades and had them erected “well in advance of the lane shift.” Area trees have also been trimmed to ensure construction signs are not obstructed.
