Man, 65, hurt in trash truck wreck caused by medical episode in Holt

HOLT, FL – A 65-year-old man was said to have suffered a medical episode, which partly led him to crash his trash truck into an I-10 overpass, sustaining serious wounds Thursday.

Florida Highway Patrol told WEARTV that this crash occurred after 11 p.m. on the westbound lanes along the Wilkerson Bluff overpass. Additional details indicate that due to the man’s medical episode, he forgot to “lower the truck bed,” which caused him to collide with the overpass in the first place.

Troopers said the impact led the man to suffer a serious head and face laceration and was airlifted to a hospital as a result.

In addition, debris from the collision came into contact with a pickup truck, which totaled the truck. However, the driver was spared from injuries.

Troopers confirmed the bridge was also damaged as a result. As such, they summoned FDOT Inspectors to the scene so they could ensure that the bridge’s structural integrity was not compromised. They deemed it safe, and any lane closures put in place were lifted.
