Fiery semi crash on US-1 in Cudjoe Key claims 1 life

MONROE COUNTY, FL — One person lost their life early Tuesday in Cudjoe Key after a semi-truck overturned and became engulfed in flames, according to WTSP.

The collision occurred at mile marker 21, north of Drost Drive and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. It was first reported just before 5:00 a.m., drawing a response from MCSO deputies, fire rescue crews, and the Florida Highway Patrol.

Although the cause of the wreck remains under investigation, the tractor-trailer rolled onto its side and caught fire.

The MCSO confirmed that one person was pronounced deceased on the scene.

A stretch of US-1 was shut down in both directions during the emergency response. While some traffic flow was reported at about 8:00 a.m. commuters were warned of lasting delays in the area.

County officials announced that due to the road blockage, trash and recycling service would be temporarily suspended from mile marker 21 to the 7 Mile Bridge.
