FORT MYERS, FL – A female pedestrian was fatally struck by a box truck on Interstate 75 South before 5 p.m. Thursday, WINK NEWS reports.
Preliminary details show that the female pedestrian was standing on the I-75 Shoulder when, for reasons unclear, walked onto the right lane in front of on-coming traffic. The box truck driver crashed into the woman. Moments later, the female pedestrian succumbed to her injuries.
The woman was identified as a 40-year-old adult local to the area. The box truck driver was identified as a 57-year-old man from Leigh Acres.
The Leigh Acres man pulled over on the interstate shoulder, remained at the scene, and cooperated with Florida Highway Patrol investigators. FHP shut down the right lane for a few hours and reopened the area around 8:30 a.m.
Lee County EMS crews also responded to the scene.
FHP is continuing to investigate the details behind the crash and has not released any other information at this time.
