LAKE COUNTY, FL — A sport utility vehicle and a dump truck collided Tuesday afternoon in northwest Groveland, claiming three lives and leaving one person hurt, reports WESH 2 News.
The fatal accident took place on a stretch of County Road 33 at Bridges Road, shortly before 2:00 p.m.
Florida Highway Patrol officials say a 47-year-old Grand Island man was behind the wheel of an SUV that was stopped facing east on Bridges Road. At one point, it entered the intersection and traveled into the path of a dump truck, causing the truck to strike the SUV’s right side.
The impact of the crash sent both vehicles off the roadway and into a tree line along the intersection’s northeast shoulder.
All three occupants of the SUV–the driver and his two passengers, a 35-year-old Longwood woman and a 32-year-old Orlando woman–were pronounced deceased at the scene. While their names have not been released, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection said all three victims were employed at the Central District Office.
Authorities said the truck driver sustained minor injuries but was not taken to an area hospital.
An investigation into the cause of the crash remains underway.
