1 killed, 1 injured as box truck rear-ends semi in Okeechobee

MARIN COUNTY, FL — A 51-year-old man lost his life Monday afternoon in Okeechobee following a two-truck collision, according to CBS 12.

The fatal accident unfolded on Southwest Conners Highway, near Port Mayaca Polo Club, at about 2:00 p.m.

An early investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol found that due to construction on the roadway, the southbound lane was closed at the time, and northbound traffic in the area was stopped by a construction flagger. The victim was operating a Hino box truck when he approached a stopped semi-truck. Authorities said the victim failed to stop in time, causing the box truck to slam into the back of the semi.

Fire rescue crews confirmed that the driver of the striking truck died from his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the box truck suffered minor injuries.

Motorists were warned of delays and asked to use extra caution should they pass through the area.
