CLEARWATER, FL – Police suspect a speeding driver was impaired when he crashed into a semi-truck on Sunday, leaving him critically injured and resulting in his passenger’s death.
WFLA said this collision happened when the semi-truck driver was reversing into a driveway located at the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel on Gulf Boulevard.
Police, who arrived at the scene after 1:30 a.m., said they found that the speeding driver, who operated a pickup truck, and his passenger were trapped inside the vehicle right under the semi. As a result, fire crews had to extricate the two men.
The passenger, who was identified as 41-year-old Mark Harris from Valrico, succumbed to deadly injuries and passed away at the collision site, while the driver, identified as 36-year-old Michael Jones from Clearwater, was rushed to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for critical, life-threatening injuries.
