SPRINGDALE, AK – Local fire crews were summoned to a multi-vehicle wreck that caused a Walmart semi-truck and another big rig to catch on fire on I-49 last Wednesday, Feb. 19.
According to 5News Online, Springdale fire, Hickory Creek, Cave Springs, Lowell, and Johnson firefighters responded to the scene after 9 a.m. Crews shut down at least two lanes. Spraying water was essential to putting out the fire. However, due to extremely cold temperatures, the water would then freeze, making roads more slippery and the act of putting out the fire more complicated and thus taking longer to contain safely. Despite the difficulty, crews were finally able to extinguish the flames fully by noon and were able to reopen the area shortly.
Officials confirmed another vehicle was also involved in the crash. The driver of that vehicle, as well as the semi motorists, were uninjured. What remains unclear is whether icy road conditions were a contribution in the wreck. Regardless, Arkansas State Police are actively working to pinpoint the the exact cause of the collision.
