Update: Trash truck driver charged after crashing into Huntsville Target

HUNTSVILLE, AL – A trash truck driver who was responsible for crashing into a Huntsville Target store on July 31 now faces several charges.

According to an update from WHNT, the truck driver has been identified as Nicholas Randall Baker from Jefferson City, Tennessee. Baker’s charges include driving with a revoked license, operating a commercial vehicle without a required commercial driver’s license, and numerous traffic violations. Another major charge Baker faces is not possessing a commercial driver’s license medical certificate. By law, Baker is required to have this federal certification in order to operate a vehicle.

Baker is scheduled to appear in court on September 1.

The collision happened around 1:30 p.m. on Carl T. Jones, when Baker experienced a brake failure, causing him to crash into a car and then the Target store. An awning had fallen on top of the trash truck, and the store itself was left with a large gaping hole.

The impact of the collision left Baker either pinned or entrapped, and he had to be extricated by fire crews.

Baker’s passenger, identified as Jason Lee King, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Baker was also injured, but authorities did not specify the extent of his injuries. First responders also said one person was taken to  Huntsville Hospital Trauma Services for treatment.

The car driver was uninjured, but their vehicle was significantly damaged.
