HUNTSVILLE, AL – A trash truck driver experienced a brake failure, causing them to crash into a car stopped at a red light and into a Target store on Thursday.
WHNT said the collision occurred around 1:30 p.m. off Carl T Jones Drive. After slamming into the Target, an awning fell onto the truck, which left the truck driver either pinned or entrapped. It took fire crews around two hours to extricate the trash truck driver.
The truck driver was freed, and along with his passenger, was injured in the crash. The truck driver’s physical condition is unclear, but first responders confirmed that the truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said at least one individual was sent to Huntsville Hospital Trauma Services for treatment of unspecified injuries, and confirmed that the car driver was uninjured.
The car was significantly damaged, and the store itself was left with a large gaping hole.
The Target store employees did not announce any closures.
As of this writing, police have not confirmed any charges.
