Teen dies following crash involving big rig on US-72 in Tuscumbia

COLBERT COUNTY, AL — A tractor-trailer was involved in a collision late Wednesday morning in Tuscumbia that claimed the life of a 19-year-old resident of Cherokee, reports News 19.

The fatal accident happened on U.S. Highway 72 (MS-2), in an area east of the Spring Mart and nearly half a mile east of Old Lee Highway. First responders were alerted some time after 11:18 a.m.

A preliminary investigation found that a tractor-trailer was turning onto the eastbound highway when the crash unfolded.

Authorities did not clarify whether the 19-year-old was driving another vehicle or if they were a passenger in the big rig, but the teen was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not reported hurt in the crash.

An investigation by the Tuscumbia Police Department remains in progress.
