Fiery crash with big rigs claims life of car driver near Oxford

NEAR OXFORD, AL – A 59-year-old man driving a Honda Accord struck a big rig and then was hit by a second tractor-trailer, leading to a fiery crash that claimed his life Friday.

AL said this collision happened before 10:45 p.m. on I-20 East when the car driver, later identified as George Curtis a Villa Rica man, had first collided with a Freightliner tractor-trailer. After the car and truck made contact, the car became disabled and Curtis’ car was then struck by a moving Volo 18-wheeler, which caused the Volo and the Honda to catch fire.

The impact of this wreck led Curtis to succumb to fatal wounds immediately.

It is unclear if the two tractor-trailer drivers were injured or will face criminal charges or citations. Alabama Highway Patrol identified the first truck motorist as 44-year-old Bruno Fernandes, a Florida resident, and the second one as 39-year-old Robert Gilbert, a Deatsville, Alabama resident.

Highway Patrol launched an investigation and has not provided additional details at this time.
