Driver dies after tractor-trailer hits SUV near I-65 in Escambia County

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, AL — A collision involving a big rig last Wednesday, February 14, near northwest Atmore claimed the life of an 87-year-old local resident, according to AL.com.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said the fatal accident unfolded on a span of Jack Springs Road near the Interstate 65 ramps.

A preliminary investigation shows that the victim, Ellis E. Lee, was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban. At one point, for reasons not immediately clear, it was hit by a 2014 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Bay Minette resident Patrick M. Bankester, 56.

First responders pronounced Ellis deceased at the scene.

Authorities did not say whether any charges are anticipated against Bankester, who was not reported hurt.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is handling an investigation.
