1 killed, 2 injured in crash involving big rig on I-59 near Ashville

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, AL — A tractor-trailer was involved in a multi-vehicle wreck Tuesday morning near Ashville that claimed the life of an Anniston man, reports ABC 3340.

The fatal collision unfolded on a span of Interstate 59 near mile marker 159, just south of Double Bridge Road, at about 9:15 a.m.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Ryan C. Harrison, 36, was operating a 2014 Kia Optima when it struck another sedan head-on, leaving him fatally injured.

Authorities said the Kia was then hit by a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer. The force of the second crash sent the Kia off the roadway and caused it to overturn. The Freightliner, which also veered off the roadway, collided with a tree, leaving debris on the roadway that was hit by a 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer.

Harrison, who was found to have been not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

First responders had the driver of the other sedan airlifted to the University of Alabama at Birmngham (UAB) Hospital for unspecified injuries. The driver of the Freightliner also suffered unspecified injuries and was transported to the same hospital.
