2 dead, 1 injured in fiery dump truck crash in Conway

CONWAY, SC – Two people were killed and a third was injured last Wednesday afternoon when a dump truck slammed into the back of an SUV, setting off a fiery, four-vehicle pileup.

WBTV reports that the collision happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. on August 20, where SC-22 crosses the Waccamaw River just south of its intersection with SC-905.

State troopers say a dump truck collided with a Chevrolet SUV that was stopped for traffic, pushing the SUV into a Jeep and a GMC pickup. The Jeep fell off the bridge and into the river, while the dump truck and SUV ignited, resulting in towering clouds of billowing black smoke.

The drivers of the SUV and Jeep died in the crash. They have been identified as Flora Beltran-Gomez and Earl Burnette, respectively.

The GMC’s driver was hospitalized with unspecified injuries, while the driver of the dump truck was unhurt.

Authorities are examining the bridge for signs of structural damage.

We have no word yet on whether anyone might face criminal charges for their role in the accident.
