NORFOLK, VA – Officials were called to the scene of a garbage truck collision that took place in the Downtown Tunnel Wednesday.
According to WAVY, the driver of the truck had crashed into the tunnel’s ceiling, which has approximately 230 ceiling tiles. The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia State Patrol were among the first responders who pulled up to the scene after 3 p.m.
Upon arrival, DOT crews shut down the tunnel so tow truck crews could remove the truck from the accident scene.
By 3:30 p.m., authorities redirected traffic toward the eastbound lanes.
Bridge engineers, who were also summoned to the scene, have not provided an update on the structural integrity of the bridge. This detail, along with the exact cause of the crash and the extent of injuries, will be posted to an updated news blog post after more information becomes available.
