Man faces DUI charges, truck driver killed in collision in Greenville 

GREENVILLE, SC – A 32-year-old man faces DUI-related charges, and a trash truck driver died following a collision on I-385 South Sunday.

The Greenville County Corner’s Office told WIOS that events unfolded when the 32-year-old man, who drove a white Audi, had crashed into a trash truck. The force of the crash caused the truck to overturn and ejected the truck driver from the vehicle. 

First responders arrived at the scene after 11:30 p.m. and transported the trash truck driver, his passenger, and the Audi passenger to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The trash truck driver later succumbed to his injuries before 12:45 a.m. at the hospital.
He has since been identified as David Mather Whitehead Sr. of High Point, North Carolina. The Audi passenger is recovering from serious injuries.

It’s unclear what physical condition the Audi driver is in. However, law enforcement confirmed he was charged with felony DUI resulting in death, felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury, and open container. Authorities have publicly identified the Audi driver as Joan Esteban Velez.
