Ambulance overturns after hitting Perdue big rig in Onley

ONLEY, VA – An ambulance with activated sirens overturned after colliding with a Perdue big rig at the intersection of southbound Route 13 and Market Street Tuesday.

Virginia State Police told WBOC that the Bloxom, VA, ambulance was responding to an emergency call. The tractor-trailer was stopped at a red light and did not move over for the ambulance. This left the ambulance driver with no choice other than to go around the truck, which caused them to collide.

The Perdue truck was significantly damaged, while its driver was unharmed.

The ambulance operator, his wife, a passenger, and another passenger and patient were all injured. Medical helicopter personnel airlifted the third passenger and patient to Norfolk General Hospital and the ambulance driver and his wife to TidalHealth in Maryland.

Criminal charges are pending. Virginia State Police did not specify the kind of charges that are expected.
